I’m sat in Suvarnabhumi airport in Thailand waiting for a delayed flight (don’t you just love air travel?) and I needed to get my porn fix in the public bathrooms. I tried a few access points before giving up and opting for the paid Wifi service which is available throughout the airport.
As i was signing up i noticed that the connection left the confines of the internal LAN and connected out to the internet for the whole verified by visa thing. Before completing the payment I open up another tab and sure enough I had free access to any website I wanted.
So if you are ever at Suvarnabhumi and want free wifi, connect to the WLANNET SSID, go through the signup process, and when you hit the screen below (before entering your credit card details) just open a new tab and browse away. The session only lasts about 10 mins, but all you have to do is open another tab and go through the process again
Get to this point and then you have free wifi
I would imagine that this method works in a few other places too
Everyone is going crazy for Bing (still can’t get over the stupid name), and of course i couldn’t help but do a vanity search on my name, lets see the awesome results it came back with…
Yep, even though my website has the most backlinks for the term “dean chew”, has content saying my name is Dean Chew, and has some authority, then why the hell does it rank 9th? I know i don’t have “dean chew” in the title, but jeeze. Besides, what the hell is Dean Forge doing in there, is that what i searched for? No! What’s even worse is that if you search just in the UK then i don’t rank on the first page at all.
Lets see what the big G has to say about this?
Thanks Google, all is right with the world again. My guess is that MS engineers are rectifying this as i type, what with all those millions of searches for my name going unclicked
So i have just finished speaking on my panel at SMX London, on what is new with social media. I think it went really well, and hopefully put the message across that social media is a powerful medium which is growing and growing.
The other panellist’s were excellent also, and we all complimented each other very well.
I have put my presentation from this panel right below, just click the image to download.
As a bonus i have put up my presentation from SES London on Successful site architecture.
I was just talking with Jane Copland about the beloved Sphinn blog and how it is always up to date ) So i decided to type in http://sphinn.com/blog and found it rather amusing when it 301 redirected to http://blog.sphinn.com/blog and then returned me a 404 error.
It made me smile that Sphinn, an SEO blog, haven’t got there redirects sorted correctly, although I do sympathise with them since they are using the rather useless Pligg platform.
Evil Green Donkey was unavailble for comment, when i leaned over the desk to ask him he put his fingers in his ears and started singing YMCA )
The blog has been a bit quiet over the last month since i have been a very busy little bee.
I just wanted to write a quick post to say that i am speaking at SES London tomorrow on the 19th February at 12:45 on the Successful Site Architecture panel.
We will pretty much be covering the following…
Learn how to successfully architect your site for search engines and how specific page elements and design technologies may impact your ability to gain good organic listings. Covers topics such as directory and file structure, server-side includes (SSIs), 404 error trapping, JavaScript, robots.txt use, frames, secure area usage, and much more. Toward the end of the session, volunteers from the audience will have their sites examined to see how changes could be made to their site architecture and design to increase search engine traffic, as time allows.
I am going to cover the more technical details, so if you around come and sit in my session and cheer me on
I just did a quick search on Google and noticed that i got those Digg like Google (Diggoogle?) results. I think its officially called Google SearchWiki, and if you didn’t know it basically just lets you promote a site up the rankings (by use of the arrow), send a site to the bottom of the rankings (by use of the X), and also make a comment about the site all within the Google SERPS.
At the bottom of the results page you also get the option to add a result, see all your notes, and see all notes that have been made about that particular search result.
Off to the top we go )
This has been in labs forever so its not new, i think may have even had it rolled out on .com for a bit? According to a post i later read over at Search engine land, it was realised to .com at the same time as .co.uk. Anyway, it doesn’t matter because this is the first time i have been logged into Google (it never shows if you are not logged in) or haven’t changed any of my settings, and it has shown up.
I think it’s pretty obvious that we won’t see our voting patterns being able to effect the natural SERPs for a while, but you KNOW that Google is mining and ploughing through all that data to continue to tailor results in the future. I haven’t looked too hard but i can’t immediately see how to turn it off either.
It’s probably worth noting that it doesn’t appear on the G Labs experimental search page, which i am sure is where it used to live, and you can check out more info on the Google Search Blog.
Finally, take a look at the video explaining it all…
Ah i love the internet, each day it seems that i find something else i didn’t know about and this time it is with the wondrous Google.
I am sure a few people will have known about this but its the first time i have seen it. I remember finding the Google calculator a fair few years back and this brought back some memories.
The first one is ‘population [country]‘ which will return the population of a country in GCalc style
The second one is ‘Area [Country]‘ which provides the land area.
I am sure there are plenty of other ones related, but i found these fun
Just got this in my email, do you think its legit? Just to hard to tell

So i arrived in Vegas on Saturday night after a nightmare flight from the UK. Nearly missed my connecting flight in NYC because of the massive lines at immigration.
I’ll be attending some sessions and playing in the poker tournament in Wednesday night, would love to meet more people so if you read my blog and want to say hello then feel free to come over and say hi, here is a picture of me
I doubt i will be posting much here this week so will go a bit quiet.
